We’ve already brought you spy photos of the coupe variant of the 2012 Porsche 911, but now we’ve got our hands on pictures of the open top model caught in action. As you can see, Porsche is sticking with its tried-and-tested cloth top, while the design looks very similar to today’s second-generation 997, albeit with some new details here and there.
Expect to see a more Panamera-influenced snout up front and new tail lamps at the back (don’t let Porsche’s faux plastic sheeting at the back fool you). Similar changes are expected inside with new parts and features to be borrowed directly from the Cayenne and Panamera models.
As with most Porsche vehicles, the real important news about the next generation of the 911 series concern the upgrades under the skin as we’ll see a revamped platform with wider tracks and a longer wheelbase along with a new engine lineup.
According to sources, the new 911 models will benefit from ugraded six-cylinder boxer units boasting the latest technological advancements including direct injection and start/stop systems for gains in power as well as reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Buyers will have the choice of both manual and Porsche’s PDK twin-clutch transmissions.
An improved suspension setup, and more significantly, a series of aerodynamic innovations and a reduction in weight thanks to the use of lighter materials throughout, will also be part of the package.
The new 911 in both Coupe and Convertible models is expected to break cover at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
